  • You have a great idea, but you just can't find the words to make an impact. That's where I come in. I'm a Herefordshire-based copywriter and editor with a love of cheese, puns and Doctor Who (not necessarily in that order). I take the stress out of getting the word out about your business by crafting compelling content that gets you noticed. Interested in working with me? • I’m a certified copywriter and the owner of Perception Copywriting. I have a passion for creating engaging content that connects with target audiences. Crafting words into messages that truly resonate with people is both my hobby and vocation. I love hearing about start-ups and SMEs, especially when they succeed. Nothing excites me more than seeing a new shop front emerge on the high street. I find myself going in just to chat to the owner and wish them luck. Likewise, in a previous life as a supply chain professional, I always enjoyed talking to new suppliers. When did they start? How many people did they employ? What was their turnover? It was like Dragons’ Den…just without the money. But some businesses fail to connect with their customers. They’re good at what they do (may even be the best), but struggle because they don’t know how to properly promote themselves. It’s not their fault. Writing about yourself is hard. And it’s easy to underestimate just how powerful words can be. My aim is to help businesses find their true voice and reach out to the right people. Using clear and concise language, I will tell their story in whatever format they choose. Perception is everything, but clarity is key. In my spare time I like travelling, motorsport, comedy, hiking, and tasting cheese (in very generous amounts!). I would love to hear all about your business journey. Contact me and let’s see how we can work together.

  • As of 2021, a love of editing inspired me to become a qualified editor. And, the excitement of online learning and fascination with words inspired me to diversify into copywriting. I love the moon, stargazing and trees, too.

  • What I do. I provide professional copywriting, editing, and proofreading services. When an individual or organisation needs a little assistance with their virtual 'voice', I create uplifting, easy-to-follow, engaging copy that will resonate with their audience. I ensure that grammar is impeccable and error-free - poor grammar is highly offputting and can be detrimental to the success of a business. I also utilise the best tone for your project. Proofreading is a process of reading drafted work that you have created. I check for errors (and common grammar mistakes) and return your piece to you. I will not change any passages, but simply oversee mistakes. Editing is similar to that of proofreading, but is generally a more thorough process. I will make suggestions for a more comfortable overall read and potentially shift a few paragraphs around. Copywriting involves a fresh write from the off! You send me a brief and I create the work. This is the most detailed of all aspects of my work, but also the most popular for overworked professionals. The bar has risen and companies are under more pressure than ever to both deliver and maintain excellence to their followers. Don't let poor grammar, ill-reading dialogue and clunky copy be the reason that someone eliminates you from their buying list. I'm also a published author with Crystal Peake Publishing house. My debut dystopian novel is called Happy State. www.happystatenovel.com

  • I write great copy that engages your audience. With more than 25 years' experience in marketing and PR I can help you to find your voice, communicate your brand, build your audience and sell your product or service. I've been freelancing for the last ten years, working with a range of clients in B2B, B2C and charity organisations. Recent clients include government departments, renewable energy companies, SaaS providers, estate and lettings agents, cancer and childrens' charities and utility providers. For some of those clients I've written a brochure, report, website or email marketing campaign, for others I provide a full marketing and social media management service. I'd love to help you craft your message and bring your brand to life. Give me a call, or drop me a message and let's chat about what you need. Much of my work is covered by non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)so can't be featured in my portfolio. Some of my other recent projects are shown below. I like to let my customers do the talking, so here's what some have said about my work: 'I rarely come across real talents that stand out like Jo. I have had the pleasure of working with her company for six years at South Staffs, collaborating on several projects. Jo has a genuinely unique ability and flair when she’s been providing communications services on critical business projects. She has outstanding proficiency and skills in this area, which is what makes a fantastic communications architect, colleague and unquestionably the type of person you want spreading the message to the business.' Dharmender Rai, Head of Project Services, South Staffordshire PLC ‘Jo understands how to develop a strong brand or corporate reputation and use it to deliver powerful communications. I have worked with her for more than 15 years on a variety of marketing communications and PR projects and she consistently delivers excellent results. She is a good strategist and manages stakeholders effectively.’ Paul Whitehouse, Managing Director, Whitehouse Mainwaring ‘Jo is an extremely effective communications professional who is both strategic and practical. Although it was a few years ago I remember her saying that effective PR has to be new, true and interesting. In charities and business generally creating profile for the brand and turning this into value is important. Jo knows how to do this and how to help others do it.’ Clive Wright, Chief Executive, Shropshire Council

“Find out what you like writing about and go all-in.”

Hannah Rose

“I am at my best in the morning, so I try to schedule all creative tasks before lunch. If I’m struggling in the morning, I use the classic strategies of changing where I’m working from, taking a break, or exercising in the hope of a Eureka moment.”

Declan Morton, Copywriter.Declan Morton

“I’ve always enjoyed writing but I didn’t set up on my own account until 2019. At that point I had been teaching for nearly two decades and had become frustrated with the academy trust to which my then school belonged. I took a plunge and set up as a freelance writer.”

Jo Watson

“I wish we were all more honest when speaking to newer or younger copywriters and telling them what to expect in their career. It’s a hard job, it’s constantly evolving, and it’s still nowhere near as widely respected (as both an art and a science) as it should be.”
