Why did you choose a career in copywriting and how did you get into it?
I worked as a project manager for many years, which involved writing lots of project proposals and positioning papers. Then I realised I was enjoying the writing more than the managing. So I got some copywriting training and started up part-time. Now I’m full-time and loving it.
What work are you most proud of?
Probably a series of articles I wrote recently for an IT company. The aim was to provide useful information, highlight the company’s expertise and drive traffic to their website. It all worked well and the client was delighted.
What piece of copy do you really wish you’d written?
‘Beanz Meanz Heinz’ – a classic advertising jingle that sticks in your mind.
What do you do if you hit a bit of writer’s block?
Go for a walk on the beach with my dog Hendrix. It really helps me figure out how to phrase something, which I record on my phone as I walk. Hendrix seems to enjoy it too.
What are your favourite and least favourite writing-related tasks?
I love researching complex subject matters and explaining them in clear and simple language. I’m not so fond of proofreading.
Any copywriting pet hates?
Not really, although it is frustrating when people want to pay you peanuts. I used to try to influence them better, but now I just walk away. Why work with someone who doesn’t value you?
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
‘Do something you enjoy’ is the best careers advice I’ve had. It’s great to wake up every morning looking forward to your work.
What advice would you give to people starting out on a copywriting career?
Find your niche and stick to it.
Why do you find ProCopywriters membership useful?
Two main reasons. Firstly, I get good quality work from it. And secondly, it’s a nice community to be part of.
The members are supportive and share valuable insights. It’s well worth the money.
