Why did you choose a career in copywriting and how did you get into it?
I was a teacher for 18 years but wanted a change of lifestyle. I have always loved writing and regularly write poetry and play scripts. So, copywriting seemed like a good idea!
I completed a course with The College of Media and Publishing. And now I am a copywriter!
What work are you most proud of?
I recently wrote copy to accompany a set of photographs which charted a year on an allotment. The message was an ecological one, so it was important to find the right words.
What piece of copy do you really wish you’d written?
“Now hands that do dishes can feel as soft as your face with mild green Fairy Liquid.”
What do you do if you hit a bit of writer’s block?
Go for a walk in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.
What are your favourite and least and favourite writing-related tasks?
Favourite: Editing. I love finding words that are not creating impact. They’re everywhere.
Least Favourite: Handing in final copy. It’s so hard because it will never be absolutely right. But you have to do it!
Any copywriting pet hates?
Jargon that I don’t understand.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve been given?
Be yourself.
What advice would you give to people starting out on a copywriting career?
It’s not all about writing. Wear an advertising hat, too.
Why do you find ProCopywriters membership useful?
It’s useful to see what’s going on in the industry. Writing can be lonely and finding other copywriters, and connecting with them, is nice.
Where can people find out more about you?
My website is jamesgillam.com. I’ll see you there.
