"Ian is such a safe pair of hands. We can send him a brief for a three-word tagline or a 3,000-word whitepaper and he never lets us down.”
The job of the freelance writer is to make ideas accessible, so that good stuff happens. I've been doing that for 25 years and I still get the same buzz from finding the right words.
Based near Bristol in the UK, I write for leading names in the world of business, branding, journalism and publishing. My services include business content, brand writing, tone of voice development, strategy articulation, ghost writing and copy editing.
At the start of my career, I worked for 10 years as a magazine feature writer (IPC Media) and columnist (GQ). That grounding helps me to bring a fluent journalistic style to articles and thought leadership for B2B organisations of all sizes across sectors and industries.
Ghostwriter for blogs, thought leadership, ebooks or non-fiction
The role of a ghost is to add value, while capturing the voice and views of the client. That means building up a rapport, asking the right questions and doing the research.
Through a combination of interviews and research, I’ll gather the raw material to write an authentic and informative blog, case study or opinion piece. By casting the net wider to colleagues, customers or clients, I can then craft a longer whitepaper or report that highlights key messaging or a strategic goal.
Writing in the style and tone of a business leader is immensely rewarding, as it invariably reveals a fascinating insight and allows the interviewee to speak at leisure. I will then write up the article or case study, which can be vetted and revised in partnership with the marketing team or interviewee.
Recently, I ghosted a 70,000-word book for a leading CEO in the US – and I am open to taking on similar, longer-form assignments.
International clients
I have worked for many agencies and multinationals in Europe, the US and the Middle East. In particular, as a confident French speaker, I work with B2B organisations in France to develop English communications – including taglines, manifestos and tone of voice development, as well as social media, video scripts, web copy, interview-led articles and reports.
I also provide editing and proofreading support to ensure that communications sound professional for English-speaking audiences.
For international development agencies, I have written many case studies, articles and reports on health, education, women’s rights, critical infrastructure and sustainability around the globe.
Recent clients include: AXA, Bentley, Mott MacDonald, United Nations, Grant Thornton, Expleo, Avios, Skoda, Eurostar, Alstom, HaysMac, Meta
